꼭 암기해야할 혼동단어

  꼭 암기해야 할 혼동하기 쉬운 단어(TOEIC.TOEFL 어형문제 대비)

1. ability : 어떤 일을 할 수 있는 능력      He has the ability to write beautiful songs.

    capacity : 용적, 용량                        This bus's capacity is 45 people.

2. accede : 동의하다, 응하다                 I hope our teacher accedes to our request.

   exceed : (양, 한도를) 넘다, 초과하다  Today's sales exceeded yesterday's

3. accept (동사) : 받아들이다                I accepted their proposals except for the date

   except (전치사) : ∼을 제외하고

             (동사) : 제외시키다

 4. access : 접근                                 Access to the office is limited.

   assess : 평가하다                            This diamond ring assessed at over $50,000

   excess : 초과, 과다                          She has an excess of shoes.

 5. adapt (동사) : 적응시키다, 조절하다    We have to adapt to the new rules.

    adept (형용사) : 숙달한, 정통한,  She is very adept at making something with papers.

    adopt (동사) : 채택하다, 양자, 양녀로 삼다  They decided to adopt the new method.

 6. addition : 부가, 덧셈         Joe has the contract to build the new addition   to City Hall

    edition : 판(개정, 증보하거나 정가 등을   변경하여 새로 인쇄, 발행한 것 )      

                                         This is the 4th edition of the English-French dictionary.

 7. advice (명사) : 충고, 조언, 권고               Please give me some good advice.

   advise (동사) : 충고하다, 권하다               The doctor advised me to exercise regularly.

 8. affect (동사) :영향을 미치다, 작용하다       Government's new policy will affect most of                                                                the  people.      

            (명사) : 감정, 정서            

     effect (동사) : (변화 등을)초래하다         I was shocked to see that her affect was  flat

                                                              even though her brother had just died.

           (명사) : 결과                    We're going to effect a change in the format  of the test.

                                                The book a profound effect on me.  

 9. after (전치사) : ∼뒤에              I will go to the market with my mother after lunch.

   afterward(s) (부사) : ∼한 후에, 나중에       I will eat lunch, and afterward(s)

                                                                I will go to the market with my mother.

 10. all : 모두 (완전, 완벽성을 강조)    A ll of the books are written in English.                                                     All was silent.

   each : 각각 (분리된 집단 구성원을 강조)      Each person has or her hometown.

   every : 모두 (한 집단의 일치를 강조)            Every student should attend the meeting.

   not all : 모두 ∼한 것은 아닌 (부분을 지칭)    Not all the students attended the meeting.     

                                                                    (Only some of them did.)

 11. already : (그 전에) 이미                        I've already finished writing the composition

      yet : (의문문. 부정문) 아직, (긍정문) 여전히

                                   Have you read the novel yet   : Yes, I've already read it twice.

 12. All right : 괜찮아. alright 이라고는 쓰지 않음.

 13. all together : (한 집단이나 장소에서) 모두  The brothers and sisters are all together at

                                                                     the table.

     altogether : 전적으로, 완전히                This is an altogether different matter.

 

14. allusion : 언급, 암시, 넌지시 하는 말  

                             He made a couple of allusions to her ugly appearance.

     illusion : 환영, 착각        

                            The mirrors produce an optical illusion.

   delusion : 현혹, 기만, 잘못된 생각           

                           She is under the delusion that she looks like Meg Ryan.

 15. also, too : (긍정문에서) 또한, 역시    I like to see movies. I also like to go to concerts.

    either : (부정문에서) 또한 역시           Do you like to see movies, too ?

                                                         No, and I don't like to go to concerts, either.

  16. amount : (셀 수 없는 명사와 함께 쓰여) 양, 총액   

                   I don't have a large amount of money.

   number : (셀 수 있는 명사와 함께 쓰여) 수, 수효    

                  There were a large number of famous  stars at the party.

 l7. any one : 누구,누군가(특정한 사람이나 사물을   가리키며 언제나 뒤에 of를 수반한다)

                  You may have any one of these dolls    

    anyone : 누군가, 누구든지(일반적인 의미)     

                 I will give this ticket to anyone who comes first.

 18. any way : 어떤 방식으로든  (대개 전치사 in 등과  함께 쓰임)           

                  I'm not happy with the product   in any way.

     anyway : 어떤 경우이든, 어쨌든,(부정문에서)   아무리 해도              

                 I'm not so hungry,   but I will go to  the restaurant with you anyway.   

 9. as far as : (거리 표현에 사용) ∼까지    I will walk with you as far as the bus stop.

     until : (시간 표현에 사용) ∼까지            We waited for him at the station until 11:30

 

20. bad (형용사) : 나쁜, 해로운, 심한, 안 좋은     I feel bad this morning.

   badly (부사) : 나쁘게, 몹시, 매우                   He was badly hurt at the accident.

   

21. beat : (팀이나 그 구성원들을) 이기다, 물리치다  

                                        Mr. Johnson won the gold medal by  beating Mr. Harrison.

     win : (경기를) 이기다                          

 22. brake (명사) : 제동장치, 브레이크            Every car has a brake pedal.

     break (동사) : 부수다, 파멸하다                Did you break your glasses again?

 23. capital (형용사) : 주된, 가장 중요한            Write your name here in capital letters.

              (명사) : 주, 지방, 나라의 수도, 자산    Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands.

   Capitol (명사) : 국회의사당    Mr. Charles has invested much  capital in the company.

                           The capitol in this state resembles  the Capitol in our nation's capital.

 24. cite (동사) : 인용하다               She like to cite sentences from novels and  poems.

     sight (명사) : 시각, 보임, 시력, 견해, 풍경 

                                               The sunset on the horizon was a   magnificent sight.     

             (동사) : 보다, 발견하다           

      site (명사) : 대지, 부지, 위치    The site of the park was once a cemetery

 25. clothes : 옷, 의복                        I will buy some new clothes this weekend.

      cloths : cloth(헝겊, 천)의 복수형    These cloths feel very smooth.

 26. compare: 비교하다

                      I don`t like to compared with other people.

     contrast: 대조하다

                     The streets of the slums contrast sharply with those of the suburbs.

 27. complement : 보충하다             This wine complements the food.

     compliment : 칭찬하다                The teacher complimented me on my composition.

 28. continual : 규칙적으로, 정기적으로 반복되는     

                      I was irritated by his continual interruption.

      continuous :멈춤과 간섭 없이 끊임없이 계속되는

                      The trees formed a continuous line on the street.

 29. counsel (동사) : 충고하다, 조언하다      He counseled me to say nothing.

                  (명사) : 변호사                       The defense counsel made an objection.

                  (검찰측,피고측 변호사), 변호인단

   council (명사) : 사람들의 모임, 회의, 협의, 평의   

                                       The council of advisors released a report.

   consul (명사) : 영사       The Korean government has a consul in Los Angeles.

 30. credible : 믿을 수 있는, 신뢰할 수 있는     

                                       No one can question such a credible story.

   creditable : 칭찬할 만한   His act was so creditable that everyone praised it.

   credulous : (남의 말을)잘 믿는, 속기 쉬운    A credulous person will believe anything.

 31. desert (동사) : 포기하다, 버리다                  The father deserted his wife and child.

              (명사) : 사막, 불모지대                     The Sahara Desert is in Africa.

   dessert (명사) : 디저트                               Cake is served for dessert.

 32. device (명사) : 장치, 고안물                    This device starts the car.

   devise (동사) : 궁리하다, 고안하다              We must devise a new plan.

 33. die : 죽다                                 Everyone dies eventually.

     dye : 염색하다                           Many women dye their hair.

 34. different from : ∼와 다르다         different than으로는 절대 쓰이지 않음에 유의

 35. disinterested : 사심 없는, 공평한     A judge should be disinterested.

    uninterested : 무관한, 관심 없는       I`m uninterested in classical music.

 36. emigrate : (타국으로)이주하다, 이민하다  

       (명사: emigrant)    He emigrated from Germany to   the United States.

     immigrate : (외국에서 국내로)이주해 오다  

       (명사: immigrant)    Many people in Chicago immigrated   there from abroad.

  37. envelop (동사) : 싸다, 봉하다               Fog envelops the coast.

      envelope (명사) : (편지)봉투, 싸개         Write the address on the envelope.

  38. every day (부사) : 매일                        I read the newspaper every day.

      everyday (형용사) : 일상의, 매일의, 평범한    It was an everyday event.

 39. every   one : ∼의 모든 것       Every one of the stolen treasures was recovered.

          (항상 뒤에는 of가 쓰인다)

   everyone : 모든 사람            Everyone was a child at one time.
