NASA's Balloon of The Future
NASA's Balloon of The Future
NASA has announced plans to build a 300 foot-high balloon that will transport astronomical instruments to the edge of space. The balloon will be designed to carry 3000 pounds of equipment more than 22 miles high and will be able stay in the atmosphere for about 100 days. The cost of the project will be one million dollars; much cheaper than the Pegasus rockets usually used for such missions Another advantage of the balloon is that the scientific instruments on board will be reusable since scientists will be able to recover the balloon after its mission.
